Hungarian-headquartered Wizz Air is now offering more flights to the Canary Islands from London Luton Airport (LTN) and Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA). The increase in the number of flights to the popular winter destination comes after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez excluded the Canary Islands from Spain’s nighttime curfew.
On mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, the Spanish government has introduced a 23:00 to 06:00 curfew in the hope of stopping the coronavirus from spreading. The Canary Islands were not included in the new state of emergency as the Atlantic Ocean islands have a lower infection rate than the rest of Spain and Europe.
The Canaries are on the UK safe list
The move to exclude winter sun destinations like Tenerife and Gran Canaria came after United Kingdom Transport Secretary Grant Shapps put the Canaries back on the UK’s “safe list” of counties and regions. With the Canary Islands on the “safe list,” British holidaymakers will no longer have to self-quarantine for 14-days when they return home.
However, tourists to the Canaries may need to prove they are COVID-19 free with a certificate or by taking a coronavirus test at a local clinic before being allowed in hotels.
In the Wizz Air press release, seen by Simple Flying, the low-cost carrier says it is adding additional flights to the Canaries so that weather weary Brits can get some winter sunshine.
Starting Monday, October 27, Wizz Air will fly twice a week from London Luton Airport to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and three times per week to Gran Canaria and Tenerife. From Doncaster/Sheffield, Wizz Air will offer two flights per week to Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife.
The Canary Islands have an ideal climate
Thanks to eternal spring-like weather, the Canary Islands have long been a top winter destination for British travelers looking for winter sunshine. And while the islands have magnificent yellow and black volcanic sand beaches, they also have historic towns and natural wonders.
Tenerife
Tenerife is home to Spain’s highest mountain, Mount Teide at 3,718 meters (12,198 feet), and is the most popular island in the archipelago, attracting more than six million visitors a year. The resorts on the island’s south coast offer yellow sand beaches, top-class restaurants, and a vibrant clubbing scene.
Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands yet accounts for half of all the island’s population. The south coast is where you will find all the resorts and the mini-Sahara like Maspalomas dunes. Las Palmas is arguably the Canary Islands’ most cosmopolitan city and a must-visit place for history buffs and shopaholics.
Lanzarote
Lanzarote is a wild and wonderful destination for people looking for outdoor adventure and is fast becoming popular with independent travelers. The Parque Nacional de Timanfaya is a UNESCO Geopark containing 300 volcanoes that last erupted in the 1730s.
Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is blessed with having the biggest and best beaches in the Canaries and the place to go if you are into water sports like surfing, diving, and deep-sea fishing.
Wizz Air recommends its Flex Fare
For passengers worried that COVID-19 restrictions and the UKs safe travel corridor could close, Wizz Air recommends people purchase their Wizz Flex Fare. With the Wizz Flex Fare, you can cancel your flight up to three hours before departure without and fee and get 100% of the original fare reimbursed as airline credit. With the Wizz Flex Fare, passengers can also change their travel to a different date or destination without penalty.
Fares from Luton and Doncaster/Sheffield to the canaries start from £26.99 each way and can be purchased from Wizz Air’s website or mobile app.
The Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco and are a 4hr 10min flight from London Luton Airport and a 4hr 25 min flight from Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Wizz Air operates a fleet of all-Airbus aircraft with an average age of 5.8 years.
