Germany’s Condor is taking up a new strategy. The leisure airline will station two Airbus A320s in Zurich in summer 2021 and expand its flight schedule. The airline stated it is responding to demand from Swiss tour operators for tailor-made vacation flights, and the routes will supplement the carrier’s flights from Germany.

Condor’s new Switzerland flights

Condor will start its summer 2021 schedule out of Zurich, Switzerland, with flights to some of Europe’s most popular vacation destinations including:

  • Daily flights to Palma de Mallorca (Spain)
  • Two flights a week on Mondays and Fridays to Tenerife (Spain)
  • Two flights a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays to Gran Canarias (Spain)
  • Three flights a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays to Heraklion (Greece)
  • Two flights a week on Tuesdays and Fridays to Kos (Greece)

  • Four flights a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays to Olbia (Italy)

These flights are bookable either as part of a package tour with Swiss tour operators, a travel agency, or online as a flight-only option.

Ralf Teckentrup, CEO of Condor, stated the following on the new Zurich routes:

“As leisure airline we are specialized for nearly 65 years in the tourism segment and co-operate closely with organizers and travel agencies. I am delighted that we are now also launching a diverse destination portfolio in Zurich and that we will be offering attractive deals for sun-seekers in the summer of 2021 together with our partners of many years on site.”

Condor’s Airbus A320

The Airbus A320 is Condor’s short- and medium-haul workhorse, flying to Europe and North Africa, primarily out of Germany. The airline operates up to 24 seats in the airline’s business class product, which are standard coach seats with an empty middle seat and enhanced onboard service.

The maximum capacity onboard the plane is 180. There are a couple of rows, the exit rows in particular, that are bookable as extra-legroom seats. Condor has 13 Airbus A320s in its fleet.

The new flights from Switzerland

Condor has had a rough year. The global health situation has forced the airline to significantly trim its route network, thereby reducing revenues and limiting profits. The struggling carrier received a few lifelines, including a government loan and an agreement with staff to avoid layoffs. Unfortunately, however, the airline was supposed to be sold to LOT Polish Airlines. That deal, however, did not go through.

With Condor’s long-haul network likely trimmed for the next few years, the 767s could find room in the airline’s short- and medium-haul operations, thus freeing up some A320s for operations out of Zurich. Photo: Tom Boon – Simple Flying

As such, now, with long-haul international flying looking heavily depressed for at least the next couple of years, Condor is looking to capture as much revenue as possible, and Switzerland is a natural extension. While Condor will face plenty of competition, the airline will likely be able to leverage its relationship with tour operators and travel agencies to keep more of its planes full.
